Mountains and Fields Ablaze during the Cape Flower Festival
Between the months of August and September, Spring brings white rain daisies and tiny yellow button daisies, blue flax & pink nemesias
The Western Cape at this time of year bursts with colours and spring flowers begin to pop up everywhere. That said, Wild flowers begin blooming as early as July and as late as October depending on the weather conditions from year to year. Coastal towns, inlands villages, mountain and fields bloom with wild flowers and this part of the country becomes exceptionally beautiful to see.
When visiting the Western Cape at this time of the year, there are many different destinations that are beautiful to visit. Combining visits to the highlights of the flower season such as Postberg (West Coast National Park), Vilddrif, Aurora, Elands Bay, Redelinghuys, Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, Darling and Hopefield you will be able to see the most beautiful flower sceneries in the country. Some of these areas offer up to 80 species of plants endemic to the region and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Knersvlakte and Hardeveld, carpeted with daisies, yellow gansogies, felicias, nemesias and vygies in between. Sheltering between the taller plants are gems like winecups, sparaxis, lachenalias and babianas which can be found easier when on foot.
Local flower shows are offered in some of the small towns such as Clanwilliam, Hopefield and Darling. These areas have guided walks and talks which allow flower enthusiasts to really take advantage of the resources offered to learn and see more.
An hour to two hours’ drive north from Cape Town, one can find one of South Africa’s most popular naturel events as part of the flower season, the Flower Power Festival.
The Flower Power Festival:
Flower Power Festival will cater for even the most discerning visitor with activities including: flower tours to the Hopefield Fynbos Show, adventure and sports in the form of golf, hiking and bicycles trails and horse riding on the beach for the outdoor enthusiasts. Entertainment provided at the property includes a food and wine fare, a flower and craft market and a full weekend of planned kid’s activities themed around the flowers. Live music will entertain guests on the Saturday night.
